| Synopsis: | |
| On his way home from his drab, run-of-the-mill job, drab run-of-the-mill Harry Balbo (Sean Patrick Flanery) is stopped on the corner by a homeless man and asked whether he can spare any change so that he can get something to eat. Harry isn’t carrying any change, but he does stop at a convenience store to buy him a hotdog. When he gets back to the corner, the man is nowhere to be seen until the headlights of a passing car show him having his blood drained by a beautiful girl with fangs. She then rips off his head and leaps through a window three stories high. Of course, nobody believes his story–not LAPD Detective Michael Loper (Boyd Kestner), not coworker Chet (Josh Hopkins), and not even Javier (Jon Huertas), the other jerk he works with. The only one who gives some credence to his story is Ronnie Klein (Brad Rowe), the convenience store clerk, but Ronnie has problems of his own. His new chick is so hot for sex that she’s draining him of all his energy.
The next night, when Harry has trouble sleeping, he wanders out to the crime scene where he sees the chalk outline of the headless victim drawn on the sidewalk and has a feeling that Ronnie might be in danger. He climbs up the fire escape outside Ronnie’s apartment and peeks in the bedroom window to see Ronnie having his blood drained by the same girl that ripped off the head of the homeless man. Unfortunately, Harry knocks over a flowerpot, which alerts the girl to his presence. She tears past him, gashing his cheek on the way. The next day, when Harry hears that Ronnie has been found dead, he becomes certain that the girl is a vampire. Searching the internet, he finds a website all about vampires, sends mail to the owner, who calls himself Nightstalker, and asks what to do. Nightstalker says that the only thing he can do is to find the vampire, stake her, and cut off her head. Harry refuses to do that on grounds that it’s murder. Turns out that Nightstalker lives in the same apartment building where Harry lives and works part-time doing maintenance, as he finds out when Strickland (Michael Biehn) in 3D calls him to fix a stopped up toilet. Strickland, an L4 quadriplegic, works out of his apartment tracking vampires. He is currently following the whereabouts of nine of them, including the one in Los Angeles. She set up housekeeping in L.A. about two months ago, Strickland explains and shows Harry the map he has made of her known killings and the areas where he thinks she might be resting during the daytime. By searching the tax records for delinquent payments, he has located 12 possible abandoned buildings she could be calling home. Harry decides to try and find the vampire before she finds him. The next day, he calls in sick. Then, armed with the map and an armload of wirecutters, crowbars, sledgehammers, stakes, and a big cleaver, he begins searching through the selected buildings. In the last one, he comes upon the vampire, asleep on the floor. Just as he’s about to pound the stake through her chest, she wakes up and pleads with him not to kill her. "I have to eat to live, just like you," she says pitifully, and Harry can’t kill her. Instead, he comes up with a plan. He steals a load of steel pipes from his company and builds a cage in the basement of his apartment building. That night, he goes out looking for her. When she sees him, she starts chasing him. Harry runs back into his apartment building, leading her down to the basement and straight into the cage. Before she realizes what’s happening, Harry slams the cage shut and locks it. At first, the vampire is enraged. When she calms down, she introduces herself as Tatiana (Charlotte Ayanna) and tries to sweet talk Harry into letting her go free. When Harry refuses, she tells him that he must either feed her or kill her. Harry agrees to feed her. The next day, he brings home a rabbit. She begrudgingly accepts it but suggests that Harry bring home an enemy or, at least, someone he doesn’t like. The only person who fits that bill is Javy, the jerk at work that hounds him relentlessly, but Harry refuses. When Strickland finds out that Harry has encaged the vampire rather than killing her, he is livid. He tells Harry the story of how he was paralyzed at 18 years of age when his army troop came upon a village in Vietnam where every man, woman, and child had been wiped out by two vampires…a male and his concubine. It took all their firepower and then a flamethrower to destroy the male, but then his girlfriend showed up and single-handedly wiped out every one of the soldiers in Strickland’s unit…with the exception of Strickland. Him she batted just once, breaking his spine. He lay there, pretending to be dead, until a reinforcement troop found him and took him to a hospital after wiping out the female vamp with napalm. Strickland suggests that Harry kill Tatiana now before she overpowers him. He recommends that Harry find himself a new girlfriend. Harry tries to kiss Cindi (Amanda Noret), a girl who lives down the hallway from him, when she brings him a dish of lasagna, but Cindi rebuffs him. Tatiana is having a hard time living on rabbit blood and keeps requesting that Harry bring home Javier for her because she needs human blood. One day, a meter reader comes down in the basement and finds Tatiana in the cage. She begs him to let her out, but he offers only to get the police, so she grabs him through the bars and feeds on him, leaving the body for Harry to dispose of. Realizing that rabbits aren’t going to do it for Tatiana, Harry goes online and buys her a pint of human blood and brings it to her on a plate with a red rose, but she tosses it across the room, refusing to drink it because it’s dead blood. Poor Harry. He’s falling in love with Tatiana. She haunts his dreams and offers to love him back in ways that he can only imagine. Meanwhile, he’s making mistakes at work, sending out the wrong flanges, and his theft of the steel pipes has caught up with him. When Chet informs him that Mr Henderson from the main office is coming to see him and Javy starts taunting Harry about how he’s going to lose his job, Harry has had it. He confesses to Javy about the insatiable girl he has in his basement and how she needs more lovers than just him. Javier, who thinks of himself as a "sexual Tyrannosaurus" is more than happy to meet Tatiana and eagerly arrives at Harry’s apartment decked out with his bag of love toys. At the last minute, however, Harry has a change of heart and tries to talk Javy out of going into the basement. Javy slugs Harry, knocking him out, and grabs the keys. When Javy sees Tatiana, he is aroused and willing to help her satisfy her "appetite". She asks him to get the key on the wall so that he can open the cage. When he comes closer, she begins caressing his arm (the one not holding the keys) until she can control herself no longer and bites down. Harry stumbles down the stairs and tries to pull Javy away from Tatiana, but she rips off his arm, pulls his entire body into the cage, and proceeds to drain him dry. Meanwhile, the body of the meter reader has been uncovered in a plastic bag in the dump, and Detective Loper and his partner have been able to identify the fingerprints on the bag as belonging to Harry Balbo. From the meter reader’s meter, they have gotten the address of the last place he visited…Harry’s apartment building. After the detectives visit Harry’s workplace looking for him, Chet gives Harry a call and warns him that the cops are on the way. Knowing that it’s all over, Harry calls Strickland to say goodbye. Then he offers himself to Tatiana, along with the key to her cage. Tatiana is reluctant but finally agrees to turn him. After the deed is done, Harry goes upstairs, knocks on Cindi’s door, hands her a rose, and asks to be fed. She invites him in. In the final scene, Strickland waits in his wheelchair facing the front door, a loaded rifle in his hand. "Come on, you motherf****rs," he shouts. "I know you’re out there, so come and get me. Come on!" |

| 1) I must admit, when I first saw the description for this movie I thoughtit was going to be awful. Im glad I watched it anyway.
The creators of this film took a tired, cheesy plot and magicallyturned it into quality entertainment. Keep in mind this is a rather low budget film with mostly unheard ofactors, and despite all of this the film was quite enjoyable. This isn't a horror film, or a comedy, or a romance, or a drama, or athriller…its more a tasteful combination of all of these. The plot develops slowly with perfect timing keeping you interested andtagging along with the main character throughout the film. The originality and unpredictability I think are the qualities thatstand out most with this film. I may have given it a better rating if it weren't for the glaringover-acting by Jon Huertas (Javier) which was a severe distraction. Over all though I would have to give my approval on this film (which israre, as I am picky). I would recommend this film to anyone. 2) I just saw the screener and it's pretty good. It's not a high budgetmovie, but it's very tastefully done. It's not about the gore, it's notquite a thriller or a comedy. It's a mixture. Keeping it real andsomewhat close to life. About the acting: There is one scene where theyshould have slapped the actor and make him do it again for screwing uphis timing, but on the whole it's very entertaining. Sean PatrickFlanery did great, although you do get the sense of a cool guy playinga dork. But that's easily forgotten by the 'hey, it's the guy from theBoondock Saints' feeling. (or maybe that's just me) I think you'llenjoy this movie. It just might make you smile, or give you a kinkyidea to try with your girlfriend… (just consider this part a joke, those fainthearted people amongst us) Anyway: good flick, go watch it. 3) Okay I watched the film & I'm not going to get real specific because Idon't want to give away too much. Pros: Cast. Lead by Sean Patrick Flanery whom I've liked since Powder. He's great in this playing an introverted Superintendent and hisapartment complex. That's only his part time job though. His day job isat some sort of steel parts office/warehouse. Michael of course addsgrit & depth as a paraplegic Vampire hunter. Brad Rowe has a small butmemorable part as a convenience store clerk. Plot. I like the direction of the storyline. I wasn't sure at first butit takes unexpected turns & with a pleasant surprise sort of ending-itrounds out things nicely. If you mesh Hellraiser, Bram Stoker'sDracula, and Grease 2, here's what you would have. (no it's not amusical) but there are elements from these 3 movies that I found here. Cons: The size of Michael's role. After Michael joins the film at about25 minutes-it seems he's going to have a huge part but doesn't.Although I enjoy the plot turns of the film-it kind of preventsMichael's part from being bigger. Acting. Not real happy with the female vampire's acting or Harry's(Sean Patrick Flanery) mean co-worker. Although I think she improved asthe movie developed, I don't think his got better. All in all it was enjoyable, I'm happy with the result, and I'm glad Ifinally own it. It's not one of Michael's best nor is it one of hisworst films. It would fall somewhere in the middle. As far as movies goit's a 10/10 because I'm biased but within only Michael's movies for arating I'd say 6/10. 4) "The Insatiable" is a well-made vampire comedy horror with a decentcast and direction. Sean Patrick Flanery plays Harry Balbo, a man whowitnesses a horrific vampire killing during his visit to his localconvenience store. Balbo becomes obsessed with tracking the beautifulfemale vampire (Charlotte Ayanna) down and is successful in imprisoningher in his basement. Ayanna is a convincing screen siren and it's easy to see how Balbobecomes her unwitting helper. Michael Biehn plays a seasoned vampirehunter – it's a small role but he makes the most of it. 7 out of 10. The ending's a bit rushed but this is a reasonable horrorcomedy. Worthy of a rental. 5) This may be the best vampire film you see this year, forget about bigbudget big star adventure movies with a vampire theme, this is true tothe legend, well produced and well acted with a small cast and probablya small budget but you'd never guess. Apart from being hot CharlotteAyanna positively simmers as the vampire trapped in the cellar by a sadlittle metalwork salesman played superbly by Sean Patrick Flannery.Even the smaller parts are well cast and well acted, it shows that theycared about this movie even though they weren't famous names. So manysmaller films suffer from poor acting by the actors who play thesmaller parts but not here, the detective is believable and the cashierin the local store is a treat. I loved the part when Harry produces amoney off coupon when buying the wherewithal to dispose of a body inthe local hardware store, that's the attention to detail that showsthis production team has a future, bring on the next movie! 6) The is only the second time I have bothered to post a comment on amovie here, although I am constantly prowling through IMDb for moviesuggestions. So to make it clear – I collect vampire movies – all ofthem, regardless if they are horrible or not. I bought this movie foronly two reasons: 1. Sean Patrick Flanery. I think I might have fallen in love with himwhen he was in Boondock Saints. His character in this movie is a FARcry from one of the Boondock Saints…but he pulled it off and wasconvincing. 2. It's a vampire movie. And like I said, even if it's horrible, I'llstill add it to my collection. So besides those two points, I had no idea what I was buying. It turnedout to be great!!! OK, it's definitely a B-movie budget, so don't gointo it expecting tons of special effects. Javier, the co-worker, isannoying enough to throw the movie away. His character is the onlyreason I disliked the movie. However, he does get his in the end, whichmakes the whole thing worth it. And hey – what a nice change, thatvampires don't get burned to a crisp by the sun in the end! Now THATalone makes this movie worth it for me. 7) This looked like one of those movies that would either be really goodor really bad. Odds usually are in favor of really bad. This onesurprised me by turning out "pretty good". Not terrible. Not great. Theacting was good and the writing was good and I was happily surprised tosee it wasn't one of those annoying erotic vampire stories with tons ofnudity and Gothic crap but no plot. Rather it was a Clerks-style comedywith a vampire drama underneath. On the other hand, I thought it was abit slow-moving. But overall it was worth my time. I was expecting itwould be one of the rentals I'd regret, a high-risk gamble gonewrong… but it was probably the best of the movies I rented for thatnight (of course that isn't saying much). I also enjoyed the plot overall because it was totally unpredictable. Can't say anything about acting as I'm not an expert but to me itseemed OK. As a pleasant bonus, the girls were pretty in this movie 9) It's a B movie, so low-production value, some of the direction couldhave use a bit more transition scene to make the movie more fluid andthe space more real but… The characters development, which is central to the movie, is excellentand keeps you hooked in. The scenes between the two main characters arestrong: they are supported by dialogues that are simple but effectiveand both actors doing a fine job. I watched "Wanted", with Angelina Jolie, and "Insatiable" the sameevening: the next day, "Insatiable" made a stronger impression on me. Whoever made this movie deserves a bigger budget. 10) I came to watch this movie randomly just because there was MichaelBiehn in it and I was pleasantly surprised! I understand that manypeople who expected a horror film were disappointed because that's justnot what it is (it's also kind of a mistake of the producers becausewhen watching the trailer, this looks like a sinister horror-thriller).In fact, it's a satiric comedy about a loser-type named Harry who fallsin love with a vampire. he's supposed to kill her, but instead he locksher up in his basement and feeds her with rabbits to prevent her fromdying. For me there is an over-all grotesqueness over this movie, starting from the idea to lock someone up in a basement (which is utterreality for some examples lately here in Europe…) over to stuff likethe pillory that Harry forges for his succubus so they can have sexwithout her being a danger for him. There is a number of extraordinaryclassy scenes such as the one where Harry, obsessed by the beauty ofthe vampire in his basement, orders some human hemoglobin online as aspecial gift for his mistress. When he comes to choose the blood type,he picks "my type" with a unique smile of satisfaction Also the side characters like Cyndi, Harry's double-minded neighbor orJavier, the guy from work who always picks on Harry and considershimself as a "sexual tyrannosaurus Rex" make the movie insightful andworth watching. By the way, I saw this movie first without knowing about it being alow-budget flick for an estimated 700k dollars. After a second watch, Inoticed that maybe the music is somewhat elevator-style and the cutsand fades are not that smooth as they are in big-time blockbusters, butunless you have an eye for it, you won't realize. It's a great littlemovie that you shouldn't miss. |
